Mining and logging played important roles in early California after gold was discovered in 1849. Trains were needed to transport tools and materials to the mining and logging camps which sprang up rapidly where gold and silver was discovered. Lumber was delivered to the lumber mills where it was processed and used to shore up mine shafts, to be made into railroad ties, or for firewood.

Visitors can see the various types of mining techniques used to extract the ore from the ground including an interactive hydraulic mining operation.
